Kew Gardens Wedding

I was delighted when Sophie and Richard asked Blume to be their wedding florist in May. I first met Sophie when she visited my stand at Most Curious in March this year. She had not been engaged to Rich for long, having been together for over 10 years, they were keen not to extend the engagement for obvious reasons! Not only were Sophie and Rich the sweetest couple, but they were getting married at the beautiful Kew Gardens in London. As a florist, you can only dream of one day being able to decorate such a historical landmark.

Weddings in May are the perfect time to use locally grown flowers, as it is the first opportunity we really get to see wonderful Spring flowers in the UK. With bases in both London and Kent, Blume have access to some of the best flower growers in the UK. Afterall, Kent is the garden of England.

Sophie and I met for a cup of tea a month or so later and we chatted a while. Sophie had some initial ideas of what she wanted, the main things were that the flowers were to feel natural and informal and after several conversations we worked together to develop a brief. The flowers were to complement the surroundings and to be in soft greens, pinks and whites with pops of yellow, and they were to be full of gorgeous scents with lots of rosemary and mint. It was very much a Spring wedding flower palette, something we were more than happy to get on board with.

Sophie wore a beautiful lace detailed vintage inspired white dress, and her bridesmaids wore a mixture of sage greens which looked beautiful against the abundantly green landscape. The groom and groomsman wore rich navy suits, which were the perfect deep backdrop for the informal style buttonholes.

We commissioned some beautiful bespoke labels which carried the theme from Sophie’s hand painted wedding invitations through to the wedding flowers.

When speaking with Sophie, she very much wanted an understated bouquet which didn’t detract from her dress. As florists, it is our job to ensure our bride is entirely comfortable knowing what she is going to get, and that she is happy. We created a bouquet full of home grown ranunculus, roses and tulips which were tied off with complementary silk ribbons. The bridesmaid bouquets followed a similar colour palette to the bridal but we added extra stems of foliage to create a more whimsical aesthetic.

For the ceremony, Sophie and Richard wanted something to frame their vowels but they weren’t sure of the traditional ceremony urn or floral wedding arch. I suggested we opt for something a little more subtle as Richard was a bit hesitant to go with an elaborate flower arch, so instead we opted for a tall and wild floral wedding meadow which was the perfect way to frame the couple, whilst still feeling relaxed and informal and still made a statement.

Down the aisle we opted for simple scented herb bunches, full of rosemary, mint and wax flower, tied off with silk ribbons along the chairs.

For the wedding breakfast we created beautiful floral urns, which again, were full of locally grown flowers. Our flowers never follow formality, we often let the stems do their own thing as we think this makes them look the most beautiful. We love a gorgeous urn when it comes to decorating tables for the wedding breakfast. We also think that sometimes less is more in a formal setting. We loved creating these low level centre pieces which were full to the brim of of double headed tulips, scented garden roses and bright tulips.

We were so honored to create the flowers for Sophie and Richard. A huge thank you to Emily Jarrett Photography who beautifully captured their day and our flowers! It was also a delight to work at Kew Gardens. The staff, especially Amelie, were so friendly and helpful. We cannot wait to work there again.

We really hoped you love our flowers as much as we do. If you are planning a wedding and are in need of a wedding florist, do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss all things floral.
